Doctor Bill Rawls’ Lyme Disease Hack: Cellular Health & Autophagy

Doctor Bill Rawls Lyme Disease Hack

Dr. Bill Rawls shares a vital insight for the Lyme community: the secret to recovery isn’t just about killing microbes—it’s about restoring your body’s internal repair system.

  1. Understand the Power of Autophagy
    • Autophagy is the body’s natural process of cellular recovery and repair.
    • Think of it as your cells “cleaning house” to stay functional and healthy.
    • Without effective autophagy, your body loses the ability to recover from the damage caused by chronic illness.
  2. Identify and Remove Autophagy Disruptors
    • Chronic illness often persists because the repair process is being actively blocked.
    • Common disruptors include high stress levels, environmental toxins, and certain pharmaceuticals.
    • Identifying these “roadblocks” is the first step toward allowing your cells to heal themselves.
  3. Boost Your Cellular Recovery
    • You can actively “turn on” your repair systems through intentional lifestyle choices.
    • Dr. Rawls recommends specific tools to support this process, such as:
      • 🌿 Targeted herbal regimens
      • 🥗 A nutrient-dense, supportive diet
      • 🧘 Stress management to protect cellular function

His message shifts the focus from the disease to the host: by restoring your cellular wellness, you give your body the upper hand in keeping microbes under control.

“If you’re doing things that disrupt autophagy, you just can’t get well… it’s so critical for that recovery process.” – Dr. Bill Rawls

This 2026 Lyme Hack was recorded during Tick Boot Camp’s coverage of the inaugural Stories That Heal: Author Series, where leaders, patients, caregivers, researchers, and advocates came together to advance awareness, education, and hope for the Lyme disease community.

Video Transcript:

Matt Sabatello, Co-Founder of Tick Boot Camp: Dr. Rawls, we’re here together again in New York City for this Project Lyme authors event. And we are doing our Lyme Disease Awareness Month Lyme Hackathon in person this year, which is so exciting. We’re so honored to have you back again.

Dr. Bill Rawls: Well, thank you.

Matt: So, I want to ask you, what is your 2026 Lyme hack for everybody watching right now? What are your tips and tricks to help them overcome this horrible disease?

Dr. Rawls: I have one, but it would take a little bit longer to explain. We can get into that later. But it’s always about cellular health. Your body has an unbelievable ability to recover, but the microbes can impair that and prevent the recovery. Tamping that down is very important, but it’s cellular recovery that is so critical—restoring the ability of your cells to keep the microbes in control. It’s a different way of thinking.

Matt: And I think for everybody listening, if they want to learn more—which they really should—they should check out your book, The Cellular Wellness Solution, which is on Amazon and on your website. That’s where you provide specific tips, tricks, and even herbal regimens to help address the cellular wellness of the human body. I think it’s really important and often what’s missing.

Dr. Rawls: It gets down to one word.

Matt: Yeah?

Dr. Rawls: Just one word. It’s called autophagy. Have you heard of that?

Matt: I have, but can you explain it, please?

Dr. Rawls: Autophagy is the ability of your cells to recover and repair. Our cells work really hard and they get worn out, so they’re constantly rebuilding. That is essential. Without autophagy, your body wouldn’t last but a few days. All chronic illnesses are associated with impaired autophagy.

What I’m learning is there are a lot of things that boost autophagy, like herbs and a good diet. Conversely, things like pharmaceuticals, toxins we’re exposed to, and stress—that’s a big one—disrupt autophagy. If you’re doing things that disrupt autophagy, you just can’t get well. It’s a topic I’m digging into deeply. I’ve created a handout to look at some of these concepts, and we’re going to talk about this a lot more because it’s so critical for that recovery process.

Matt: For everybody watching, we have a ton of podcast interviews with you out there, but everyone should go to your website, rawlsmd.com. You have links to your books and a ton of free resources there. Dr. Rawls, thank you so much for being part of our Lyme Hackathon.

Dr. Rawls: Pleasure. Thank you, Matt.
