“WHEREAS, Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection primarily transmitted by Ixodes ticks, also known as deer ticks and blacklegged ticks, and can be found throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 500,000 people each year are diagnosed with Lyme Disease in the United States. Duke University researchers discovered that despite early diagnosis and treatment, about 36% of individuals with the disease will experience persistent, chronic symptoms consistent with active infection; and
WHEREAS, Lyme Disease can impact every system in your body and become debilitating. Symptoms include sever neurological complications, numbness, pain, weakness, paralysis of facial muscles, visual disturbances and meningitis symptoms; and
WHEREAS, in addition Ticks carry other bacteria, viruses and parasite that can make you sick in addition to the development of autoimmune diseases; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Brookhaven wishes to promote the health, awareness and well-being of its citizens; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Town Board of the Town of Brookhaven hereby declares the month of May 2022 to be ‘Lyme Disease Awareness Month.'”
