A Tick Bite Can Make You Allergic to Beef? It's Called Alpha Gal Syndrome (AGS)

0 Comments | | Return |

No More Steak? No More Bacon? Can you imagine? No more beef tenderloin, sausage, pork tenderloin, roasts or hamburgers?

According to a recent article by Kicker 102.5, "this is a disease that doctors are still learning about and we believe it is an extremely underdiagnosed tick-borne illness."

They went on to say, "the allergy is often missed or misdiagnosed."

It's called Alpha-Gal and you can get it from a tick. The Lone Star Tick to be exact.

Lone Star Ticks are small and the females have a little white-yellowish dot on their backs.

Author Lisa Lindsey noted this "allergy to meat can take up to 8 hours making it even harder to diagnose."

Symptoms include GI distress, rash or hives, Angioedema (swelling and redness, especially around the eyes, cheeks or lips), whole-body itching, and sometimes even Anaphylaxis Shock.

For some with Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS), the allergy extends beyond beef to all animal meat, fish, dairy and animal by-products found in medications. This can be extremely challenging.

We at Tick Boot Camp know many people both locally here in New York and also through our advocacy work who have Alpha-Gal, such as @TwoAlphaGals and @ShroomLovesFrog.

Visit AlphaGalInformation.org to learn more and if you suspect alpha-gal, ask your doctor to run an alpha-gal blood test to supplement a full tick-borne disease panel.
